Fuel Corn
Using corn as fuel has many advantages:
- The supply of gas and oil is limited - corn is a RENEWABLE source of fuel
- The nations farms and economy are also helped when we use corn as a heat source.
- We decrease our dependence on foreign oil if we use corn as a source of heat.
Some manufactures boast that their stoves can burn corn with 16% or higher moisture, this has proven to be a bad idea for several reasons.
- Wet corn (15% or higher) will drop the Btu rating from 2500 to 1500 Btu's per pound
- Wet corn will cause incomplete combustion, and result in larger “clinkers”
(ash deposit)
- Messy residual build up on the outside of home not associated with burning of dryer corn
Also, in order to avoid excessive service calls, fuel corn, like our corn stove corn, should be screened for rocks, dirt and chaff.
Because of low corn prices the use of corn as an alternative heating fuel has become more attractive.
